Transitional justice and accountability in Libya

Libya has long suffered from widespread impunity for mass killings and other serious crimes. Since the 2011 revolution that removed Qaddafi, civil war has complicated efforts to pursue accountability for atrocity crimes.  The International Criminal Court has issued several arrest warrants against those suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity as a result of the instability and violence the country has faced over the past decade. 
The discovery last year of three hundred bodies in a mass grave in the provincial city of Tarhuna sent shockwaves through the country and the international community, bringing the Libyan humanitarian crisis once again to the forefront of the news. In this context, making perpetrators accountable will be essential to ensuring a peaceful transition of power as well as ensuring justice for the victims.
